Circumstance by Stephanie Smith
Time is drowning
in the fluids of our celestial bodies
The egg is cracked
and leaking our unborn children
as we fling old clocks over branches to dry
We long to bask in the first sunlight of Spring
but things don’t always happen
the way we want them to
And circumstance proves time and again
the cancer in our lungs will do us in
until there’s no one left to mourn
