Two poems by Joe Quinn

Poetry
by Joe Quinn

silent films

god loves us all
in small doses
but I don't want to be
a placebo

please excuse
my side effects
please excuse
this train wreck

I saw you
tied to the tracks
like a penny
taped down to the rails

and I stopped
to smell the roses
in your crown of thorns

---------------------

couldn’t say a son

I still say the same thing
just in a different way
"you're going to die in this town"
from angry 18 and damning
to a lonely quarter century
of almost understanding

(I'll feel sorry for you
your hands don't seem to know how)

are you getting all Jesus on me?
he asks

no,
they all get Jesus
they nail their feet to the ground

me
I want to be an angel
even if I have to paint a sky across this ceiling
and keep on climbing the walls
